About the Dorset Ramblers

Dorset Ramblers is a small independent club which was founded over 70 years ago.  Its main purpose is to arrange regular Sunday walks throughout the year, usually in Dorset and sometimes

in the adjoining counties of Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire. This part of England offers widely varied unspoilt countryside and spectacular coastal scenery.

There are always Sunday morning walks, which normally start at 10.15 and often shorter afternoon walks.  Walks are planned as either circular or “figure of eight” routes with distances (for the day) of between 5 to 12 miles.  There are usually about 10 to 20 people on these rambles.

We walk for the simple enjoyment of being out and about in such wonderful countryside and for the pleasure of each others company.  Thus we walk a moderate pace with pauses to appreciate our surroundings and to get our breath back on hill tops!  Lunch stops are usually arranged as picnics and / or at cafés or public houses.

We are a small friendly club which welcomes new members. Non-member day-visitors can join us for an initial walk or two, before deciding whether to join the club.  Please note that we have public liability insurance cover for the club but personal accident cover is up individuals. The membership fee is modest (see the Join Us page).  For safety and insurance reasons, dogs cannot be allowed on any of our organised walks.

We sometimes arrange social events such as a Summer barbeque and a Christmas dinner and the occasional outings to places of interest elsewhere in the South / South West.  Members are also welcome to join an annual walking group holiday which is usually arranged through HF Holidays. Members are kept informed of events through the Club News website page or by post and e mail.

Members may be interested in the well-researched Walking in England website which has thousands of free walks to download and print. It has walks from Cornwall to Cumbria to Kent and from one to twenty miles and is packed with useful information.  Links take you to walking books, maps and many other UK walking groups.
